In this training drill Tee MUST SIT on
the whistle
So the challenge is to have her sit
when and were you want...I like to
vary the length and tone of the
whistle..She is close so you don't
need a loud drawn out tone..BUT to
stop her very close to the bumper I
use a sharp loud tone..To bring her in
VERY SLOWLY or just turn her I drag
a low tone on the whistle......This
works very ..When the target is very
close left or right or if she over ran
the target....At a long distance the
sound takes to long to get there...she
could move 20' before she hears the
stop whistle...If you practice you can
have her walk very slowly to the
target as you whistle and move her
with your body and hand
movement..Plus if you need to stop
her, all the come in whistles blend in
with the stop whistle at long
distances
I use a single tone for sit ( TOOT)and
a double tone (TOOT-TOOT) for the
come in and stop blowing..I use the
double tone for the come in because
if the dog is coming in why blow
anymore..It is just like saying HERE
HERE over and over when the dog is
running back to you...Plus you cant
really slowly finesse a dogs
movements with a series of direct
tones ( Most dogs will move too
rapidly)
Siting on the whistle in
water...Use the same whistle
tone as on land...TAKE YOUR
TIME...Tee does not like to tread
water so I make her do it with
the stop whistle..If she moves to
swim after the bumper before I
give her the hand signal..I stop
her and nick at same time..If she
takes the wrong cast I stop her..
End your sessions with play bumpers...NO COMMANDS... Let them be a dog and have fun.

Don't get in a pattern...This was
for the video short clip..Vary
your whistle commands...
More water work training...Tee
does not like to sit in water, with
an object in her mouth...She
finally starts to do it in this clip...
The longer retrieve shows you
need to take your time before
giving a cast..Have the retriever
circles (Scalloping)
In this training session,Tee
needs to take a cast right.
Then swim by the training
bumper to the left..DO NOT
HESITATE...If she makes the
slights wrong movement
stop her..( The collar was
used through out the drill)
and cast again..Keep up the
corrections to keep her on
the correct line...If I was slow
she would have grabbed the
bumper..NEVER wait to see
if the dog will correct
itself..They rarely do..
In this drill Tee Must run in a straight
line to an unsee pile of bumpers..The
obstacles are...Entery into water exit
onto land. Enter water through a
channel exit water to pile...Then
return on the same line..The owner is
the handler who has done a great
job with his dog...
