Training Tips For Your Retriever
|

This is the key to training your retriever. If you can
have your pup look up at you like this, as if to
say "WHATS NEXT DAD" you have it made. This is a look of not only respect for the trainer but also
one that wants to please. OK you ask "how do I get the look"? Well you need to be consistent in your
commands, show the retriever you are able to control them and yes become a friend. Before every
training session while pup is in kennel I stroke, pet and talk to them. Then make pup sit while putting
on the training equipment..They my wiggle and squirm but make them sit before they leave
kennelThis is all the start of control. I always play with pup before the training begins. Throw
bumpers or just get on the ground and wrestle and have a good time with pup. Then I throw in a
sit...Make pup sit while putting chock chain on.....Do this every time you put equipment on
pup......Move right into the training session..Always talk to pup like a friend while training..I reach
down and stroke pups head often, tap leg to move pup forward along with a tap with chain. Talk to
them..If they do a few maneuvers correctly break down into play be very happy for the success...Then
immediately turn to training. Pup will be wanting to pleas after a few sessions of this work play
training. They will over time stop in there tracks when you say sit to put on the
equipment..."Why?"....You made it fun and you showed pup you know what you are doing...I use to
train up to 20 dogs a day with this tecnique..I get in and get out with success.. I make it fun for
them..They look forward to get to it.

Train for the hunt....Try to find the type cover, water and land your
retriever will see. The photos below are of a pup in training at 7
months of age..She is introduced to hunting at 3 weeks into the
training...No commands are given...Do I let her run around like an
idiot? No I keep her in control by keeping her interest up by talking to
her..This is a Lean Mac line dog ( FC Bowie & Hunts For You
Sandy) and full of energy. It is some what easy because she is used
to the voice I use while training,to keep her involved and
interested..She knows something is going on and there is a reason
why were out there...No steady to gun no yelling. I let her be a
pup,she is showing me her natural hunting instincts without my input.
Everything is positive in this training..She is used to coming
back with praise so there is no need to yell HERE..The pup turns
back with the bird ..You should be happy and say GOOD
DOG..GOOD GIRL With a few claps while on her level..Show her
that she is the best for not playing around and coming back
immediately with your bird. IF she starts to slow down, encourage
her by clapping and saying her name. While walking away looking
over your shoulder. RUN if you have room while calling her NAME...If
she is used to being praised at your side she should run full tilt back
to you....If she forgets she has the bird and drops it out in the
water...DONT WORRY at this stage in the game..Just get her VERY
EXCITED about the bird and reascend her by throwing something
out to the bird (ROCK)..If you can walk out to it DO SO....DO NOT
SAY FETCH OR HOLD at this point she does not know what in the
world you are saying...So DO NOT EXPECT HER TO HOLD THE
BIRD ALL THE WAY TO HAND...PRAISE PRAISE your way into
tricking her to come to you with the bird...SEE PIC
She has been tricked into forgetting all about
drooping the bird..I am walking very fast away from her,
while saying GOOD DOG come on ginger and clapping......
At no time did I say here and she nearly knocked me down getting to
me and dropped the bird at my feet. This is the start of the
comfort zone you will need later...When you start hold-fetch
and drop.
The bottom line is to have your pups intro to different things FUN. Do
not expect perfection..DO NOT be so military. DO NOT always use
commands. Use PRAISE to get better results...The last thing a pup
wants to hear from you is a stern command when there unsure of
themselves

This is as steady as I expect... At this
Stage..... She is looking for
something..Expecting to retrieve but
under control
Gadwall Drake shot at 40 yds
Ginger running back with bird...
Only praise was used to have her turn
and run back...
The video below shows the cut
version....What most trainers show..
A pup in the water for the first time...
What do you do if he does not come back...Why
aren't you steadying him...Do I yell commands to
get him back...See the uncut raw footage next
to this one...
To get dozer to settle down I use sit. He is very good at
that command..here at this point is so so. I step away
from him and that draws him to me..Then I throw in a sit to
stop him. I will not even think of steadying this pup..He is
not used to swimming yet. This is his first real swim and I
want to let him gain confidence...Praise Goes a lot
further than yelling commands......
My dog just sits there...I drill and drill. He just
does not get it...I nick him and he still just
ignores me or half way completes the
command...He does not come when called or
come to the heel position, even though I have
taught this for weeks...
Lets face it...It does not take a brain child to
learn to come when called...The problem
might be that you forgot what the dial on your
collar was put there for...This is for dogs that
have been taught these concepts
and give you obvious refusals...Say
here.. When he looks at you say
here again..Get on his level..Clap
take a step back..Once he moves
towards you say HERE..Nick him
on (automatically at the same
time) a MUCH HIGHER
SETTING
On his way to you nick again
at a lower setting,while
saying HERE...YOU
MUST USE YOUR DIAL
Try to get him to
commit..Get
down on his
level..Then once
he is moving
towards you
...NICK
